In 2012 we had a C.R. Onsrud CNC router installed in our warehouse for doing machine demos. I also used it for making signs, furniture for home, and a wide range of other things.
The video below shows me doing a test cut in Pine and MDF to make sure the program worked, before doing the final cut in much more expensive Padauk.
The finished inlay is approximately 1/4″ deep into an edge glued White Oak slab, with Padauk used for the lettering and the chain links, and Black Walnut used for the straight lines. After inlaying the darker woods, the slab was machined flat, then taken to a client’s shop for wide belt sanding.
I hand applied 3 coats of Danish Oil finish before mounting the sign on our office wall. Unfortunately our logo changed after making this sign, so it’s now hanging in a back area of the office.
